Research

Independent research for Baltic commerce.

BAICA is a nonprofit research and education association. Our research exists to answer one question: what is actually happening with AI in Baltic commerce — not what vendors claim, and not what headlines suggest.

Independent

No vendor funds, sponsors or previews our research. Findings are published as we find them.

Anonymised

Survey responses are aggregated. No company or individual is ever identifiable in published results.

Free

Every report, guide and dataset summary is published at no cost, no paywall, no sales follow-up.

Practitioner-focused

We write for the people who run commerce businesses. Every publication ends with actions you can take.

Publications

Published guides

Our first four practical guides were published in June 2026. Each is a focused, free read of about six minutes.

EU AI Act checklist — Published June 2026. What the EU AI Act requires of commerce businesses before full enforcement on 2 August 2026.

AI vendor evaluation guide — Published June 2026. The questions to ask before signing with any AI vendor.

Customer data and AI — Published June 2026. Using customer data in AI without breaching GDPR or customer trust.

The first 90 days of AI adoption — Published June 2026. A structured plan for a commerce business's first three months with AI.

Flagship study: 2026 State of AI in Baltic Commerce

Our first region-wide study surveys commerce businesses across Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania. It examines four things:

  • Adoption rates — which AI tools are in production use, piloted or absent, by company size and sector.
  • Use cases — where AI is applied today: customer service, merchandising, logistics, marketing, back office.
  • Barriers — what stops adoption: cost, skills, data quality, regulatory uncertainty, trust.
  • Spend intent — how budgets for AI are expected to change over the next 12 months.

Who should take part. Anyone responsible for technology, operations or strategy at a commerce business operating in the Baltics — retailers, e-commerce companies, marketplaces, wholesalers and D2C brands of any size. One response per company is enough.

Timeline. Fieldwork open now. Survey closes: October 2026. Report published free: December 2026.

The survey takes about ten minutes. Every participating company receives the full report — the same free report everyone receives, at the same time.

Methodology

Target sample. We aim to survey commerce businesses across all three Baltic states — Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania — spanning company sizes from micro-retailers to enterprise, and both online and omnichannel operations. The final sample size and composition will be disclosed in full in the published report. We will publish response counts by country and segment, and we will state plainly where the sample is too small to support conclusions.

Anonymisation. Responses are collected with company identifiers used only for de-duplication and segment classification. Identifiers are separated from answers before analysis. Published results are aggregated.

No vendor sponsorship. The study is funded by BAICA and carries no sponsorship from AI vendors, platforms or consultancies. No third party sees results before publication or influences the questionnaire.

Review. The questionnaire, analysis and final report are reviewed and approved by the BAICA Board before publication. Errors found after publication are corrected openly, with a dated correction note.

Questions about methodology are welcome via our contact page.

Research notes

Between major publications, we post short research notes — questionnaire updates, fieldwork progress and early observations from the study. Read the latest in our news and updates section.
